US defense officials told NBC News that Daesh's second-in-command was killed during a raid earlier this month in Syria.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joe Dunford are expected to confirm the death of Haji Imam and provide further details on the raid at 10:30 am local time (GMT -0500).

Earlier this month Omar al-Shishani, another top Daesh commander, was confirmed dead after succumbing to his injuries sustained in another US-led airstrike.
