Britain has closed its embassy in Damascus, Syria, to the public for "security reasons," the British Foreign Office declared Wednesday.
The embassy closed its doors on February 10 but continued to operate as "normal," the announcement said.
A British Foreign Office spokeswoman conveyed: “It is closed to members of the public for security reasons. But it is working as normal.”
The move was announced on the Foreign Office website. Travel advice on the website states: “There is a high threat to Western, including British interests, from terrorism in Syria, as there is in other countries in the Middle East. You should be particularly vigilant in public places, including tourist sites."
"If you are in Syria, you should review your personal security arrangements carefully. You should exercise caution and remain alert to your surroundings."
"British nationals resident in Syria have been advised to exercise particular caution when arriving at/leaving their residences and places of work." (Albawaba.com)
