The British University in Dubai hosted a high-level delegation from Pakistan’s National University for Sciences and Technology (NUST) Institute of Information Technology, it was announced today.

The meeting brought together experts from both Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, whose research agendas combine innovation in information technology with a maturing reputation for solid teaching strategies that meet the needs of industry, government and society.

Led by Mr. Muhammad Asghar, the Rector of NUST and Dr. Arshad Ali, the Director General of NIIT, representatives of the Pakistani higher education institution are set to visit Dubai in order to observe the work of BUiD in contributing to the provision of postgraduate education and vocational training within the United Arab Emirates. Members of both institutions also made arrangements to participate in HONET 2007, a cutting-edge technology conference running 18-20 December in Dubai.

“This meeting confirmed that both of our universities are developing a 21st Century agenda,” said Dr. Arshad Ali, Director General of NUST Institute of Information Technology. “Inspiring events such as these pave the way for authentic collaboration between our institutions, where we can learn from each other.”

Ahmad’s praise for BUiD was reciprocated by Dr. Saad Ali Amin, Head of BUiD’s Faculty of Informatics. “We can learn a lot from the opportunities presented by our international liaisons,” said Rahwan, one of the organizers of yesterday’s meeting. “We’re looking forward to working jointly with our colleagues at NUST in future, not least on the forthcoming HONET 2007 event in Dubai.”

By staging this meeting, academics from both countries were able to identify areas of mutual interest in order to develop future research. In addition to discussing possible staff and student exchanges, an ambitious package of initiatives to encourage entrepreneurship was on the agenda.

The recently renamed Faculty of Informatics will be playing a key role in a number of major information technology-based conferences and public events throughout 2008.
