The British University in Dubai triumphed over a range of international universities with a winning bid to host a leading world event in technology management, it was announced today.

The 17th International Conference on Management of Technology will be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman of the Emirates Group, hosted by The British University in Dubai, a significant honour for the rapidly-developing academic institution.

Following a successful proposal to the International Association for Management of Technology (IAMOT), an organisation that supports innovative research and practice, BUiD will organise next year’s global gathering in Dubai. The mission of the conference is to tackle key issues arising from the application of technology in the knowledge economy. It will attract renowned academics and practitioners from all over the world in the area of management of technology.

The university’s triumphant persuasion of the organisation represents a major win for Dubai, joining a handful of world cities – most recently Miami, Florida – as conference hosts. The rapid growth of and technological development in the region, coupled with Dubai’s reputation for booming markets across many sectors, makes it an ideal location for obtaining insights into international technology management.

“We are delighted that The British University in Dubai is to be the Host University for this prestigious conference. Technology plays a key role in helping shape the knowledge economy and this conference is set to summarise much of the latest research in this area,” said Dr. Abdullah Alshamsi, University Vice-Chancellor, The British University in Dubai.

The conference aims to bring together academic researchers and practitioners alike. It is an opportunity to strengthen the ties between industry sectors within the UAE and their international counterparts. Such developments coincide with the vision of creating a knowledge economy, advocated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of UAE, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

The event will closely complement the status of BUiD as a distinctive institution rooted in a graduate research culture: “As the official conference of IAMOT, the event is set to draw leading thinkers from around the world, to discuss a range of critical issues. BUiD’s growth and commitment to this project is in step with achieving the university’s goals, moving rapidly from promise to prominence,” said Dr Mohammad Arif, a conference co-chair and the mastermind behind BUiD’s bid to bring IAMOT 2008 to Dubai.

“A conference such as this shows we have a unique edge, enabling the institution to perform a major role in the region. There is a human element to the use of technology and without managing it effectively, it will not be possible to exploit this key resource,” added Dr. Arif.

The 17th International Conference on Management of Technology, “Creating and Managing a Knowledge Economy,” will take place from April 6-10, 2008, at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC), Dubai, UAE.  Consultants, software vendors and other universities will be given the opportunity to display their services.

BUiD will open the event with a series of specialized pre-conference workshops held on 6th April 2007 and open to all. More details can be found at www.buid.ac.ae/iamot2008
