President Bush Tuesday night that rebuked critics of his strategy for the war in Iraq. In his annual State of the Union address, Bush said, "There is no peace in retreat." He also lashe out at those who complain he took the country to war on the erroneous grounds that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.
"Hindsight alone is not wisdom," Bush said. "And second-guessing is not a strategy."
He declared that the "the state of our union is strong" despite Americans' anxieties about the war in Iraq.
Bush added the nation must not falter in what he called the "central front in the war on terror." Bush did not offer any timetable for bringing American forces home from Iraq.
He urged Hamas to "recognize Israel, disarm, reject terrorism and work for lasting peace."
According to the AP, Bush said the United States and its allies were united in insisting that Iran not develop nuclear arms. Speaking directly to the Iranian nation, Bush said the United States "hopes one day to be the closest of friends with a free and democratic Iran."
