Sunday marked the arrival of US Secretary of State John Kerry in Cairo. This is his first visit since the Islamist president Mohamed Morsi has been removed from government.
Not only is he there to push Egypt's military-installed rulers for democratic progress, he is also looking to shore up ties with an integral regional ally, according to Agence France Presse.
On the eve of the opening of Morsi's trial, Kerry landed in Cairo, an AFP correspondent said, just weeks after Washington suspended part of its $1.5 billion in annual aid to the country.
In recent difficulties the US is experiencing in its relations in the Middle East “Russia is hoping to capitalize beginning with efforts to launch greater cooperation with Egypt that could result in Moscow gaining access to the country's Mediterranean ports," according to a report by UK newspaper The Times.
