A powerful explosion in Cairo occurred in front of the Italian consulate in the city center on Saturday, killing one person, the Health Ministry said.

A security official said a car bomb caused the blast. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion.

Medics at the site of the blast told AFP that the blast also wounded two policemen stationed outside the consulate and three passers-by.

A MENA report cited witnesses as saying the force of the explosion had caused massive destruction to the building.
