Daesh (ISIS) militants have destroyed ruins in the ancient city of Hatra in the north of Iraq, Reuters has reported.

An official from the tourism and antiquities miniatry said that there had been reports from employees in Daesh-controlled Mosul about the destruction of the 2,000 year old site.

The official cautioned that it was difficult to verify the reports of the damage. A resident told Reuters that he heard a powerful explosion and that other people in the area described Daesh militants destroying some buildings in Hatra.

Hatra was named a World Heritage site in 1987.
