Two Saudi police officers and three suspected Al Qaeda fighters were killed in the third day of clashes with Saudi policemen in the city of Dammam near the Iraqi border overnight.
Saudi security sources said the firefight occurred in a home in which Al Qaeda members were supposedly hiding, according to Reuters. The battle in Dammam, which began on Sunday, has entered its third day, leaving in its wake a total of three Saudi policemen and five Al Qaeda members dead.
At least one of the men killed was on the list of the 36 most-wanted Al Qaeda activists in Saudi Arabia, according to reports of the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television station.
On Monday in the nearby town of Dhahran, the US consulate shut down temporarily as a result of the fighting.
