Trend Micro, a leader in network antivirus and content security software and services, warns internet users to be wary of online criminals bearing false festive cheer this season.
In recent years many people, especially those with families living abroad, have adopted the practice of sending seasonal messages using email, replacing the traditional greetings card.
This opens them up to a current fraudulent technique, which involves the creation of malicious websites. These show up on popular search engines by using common seasonal phrases such as “Eid Muburak” or “Christmas gift shopping”. When shoppers obtain their search results, they can also acquire links to sites hosting various malware designed to steal a user’s financial information and identity.
Trend Micro has also identified a recent twist to the formula, where fake e-cards and e-greetings are designed to look genuine, by using brand names similar to well-known companies. Ironically, the e-cards often sign off with an authentication claim, stating that there are no worms or viruses in the body of the email itself. These messages encourage a false sense of security on the part of their intended targets.
Regardless of what the warnings say, Trend Micro warns that the links contained within these emails will redirect users to websites that will begin installing a combination of malicious software – such as worms, Trojans and bots – onto the user’s computer.
“Holidays are a soft opportunity for online criminals, who take advantage of the increased internet traffic,” said Samir Kirouani, Senior Technical Engineer, Trend Micro Middle East and Africa. “With a spike in the amount of websites and emails geared towards seasonal themes, there is scope for online browsers to confuse authentic sites with fraudulent ones,” he added.
Trend Micro recommends using a web threat protection technology that is able to block malicious content on web pages, thereby preventing infection before it occurs. If users are unfamiliar with the source of a particular offer, they should not download from there.
