Double celebration for new zealand at the emirates airline edinburgh sevens
The New Zealand Sevens team on Sunday clinched a magnificent double, with victory in the Emirates Airline Edinburgh Sevens, as well as collecting the trophy for topping the IRB Sevens World Series.
New Zealand overcame a spirited England side 24-14 in the Cup final, having beaten the home side 36-14 in the morning’s quarter final, and last week’s Emirates Airline London Sevens winners, Samoa 14-0 in the Semis.
South Africa beat Scotland 14-5 in the final of the Plate, much to the disappointment of the vibrant Murrayfield crowd. Australia outclassed a gutsy Canada in the final of the Bowl to win 24-14 and Portugal clinched the Shield in a 10-5 victory over Russia.
Away from the rugby action, Saba’a, official mascot of the IRB Rugby World Cup Sevens to be held in Dubai in 2009, competed in the famous Murrayfield Mascot race, and the Emirates Airline Passing Challenge; an inflatable rugby ball throwing game created to raise awareness of the IRB Rugby World Cup Sevens, was a top destination over the two days.
The Passing Challenge was in action throughout the tournament with many hundreds of children (and more than a few grown-ups) testing their passing skills. Both the Scotland and England rugby teams visited the Passing Challenge to show off their skills, when they weren’t competing on the pitch.
