Scores of people died after suicide bombers targeted worshippers in a mosque outside Maiduguri in northeast Nigeria, witnesses and an emergency organization said Friday.
One of the suicide bombers detonated the device during evening prayers late Thursday, killing everybody in the mosque, said Abubakar Maina, one of those who helped in the evacuation of the victims.
"A little while later when people rushed in to try to help, the second bomber detonated his own bomb, killing many of the rescuers," Maina said.
"There were nothing less than 42 people already dead when we got there ... Parts of human body were scattered all over the place. It was well planned and executed."
Another witness, Mallam Babakura, told dpa that more than 45 people had been in the mosque. "I believe everyone perished," he said.
An official at Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency, who sought anonymity, told dpa that at least 32 people had died in the attack.
Police said the mosque collapsed after the explosions, injuring many more people.
The militant group Boko Haram frequently carries out attacks in northern Nigeria. It seeks to establish a state with the strictest interpretation of Islamic law, and has killed thousands of people in the region.
Earlier this week, the White House said the US military would send troops to Cameroon to conduct airborne surveillance and intelligence operations in the fight against Boko Haram.
