Police has arrested 89 alleged Muslim Brotherhood members who “incited and planned violence,” ahead of protests planned by Islamists on Friday, the Ministry of Interior's spokesperson said.

Seven improvised bombs were also defused in Cairo, Alexandria, Sharqiya and Beni Suef, Hany Abdel-Latif said, state-run news agency MENA reported. The police have reported finding bombs almost daily since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

A Salafist group called for protests on Friday "to preserve Egypt’s Islamic identity” and call for Sharia (Islamic law) rule, a call that gained the backing of the formerly ruling Muslim Brotherhood.

Police and army forces are implementing a security plan to abort any attempt at terrorizing citizens, Abdel-Latif said.
