Seven Islamist militants were sentenced to death Tuesday by an Egyptian court for killing 25 soldiers in the Sinai Peninsula, AP reports.
All seven men except one in absentia will await a final court ruling on December 6, while the country’s grand Mufti will review the decision.
The attack was carried out in 2013 when militants ambushed two minibuses transporting off-duty policemen close to the border town of Rafah.
Security forces had killed up to 1,000 supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi days beforehand during protests in Cairo, leading to tension across the country.
