Egypt, Libya and Tunis will be linked together by the railway, which Libya has launched its construction tender to enhance its economy and trade ties with the neighboring countries.

The project consists of linking the western border with Tunisia to the eastern border with Egypt, with another railway due to link Libya's north and south, AFP said, quoting official as saying.

The unnamed source said the first track would run through the country's main coastal resorts while the second would be built between the Mediterranean city of Sirte and serve the borders with Niger and Chad.

The official indicated that once the project is completed, then, a network linking Europe to Africa would be possible if a tunnel was dug under the Gibraltar strait.

It is the second giant project to bring Libya and Tunis together in one-month time, as they are about to finish their studies with Mali over the establishment of a joint airline venture later this year – Albawaba.com
