Egypt sent extra troops to guard foreign embassies in Cairo on Sunday night, especially those of the United States and Israel, after the US-led strikes against Afghanistan, sources close to the security services told AFP.
More troops were also deployed around the home of the Israeli ambassador in the capital's southern suburb of Maadi, according to an AFP correspondent.
Egypt has so far not issued an official reaction to the pounding of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban regime on Sunday by US and British forces following the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.
But the key Arab country’s position had been already expressed as leaders voiced reservation over the US-led anti-terror war.
The top aide of Osama bin Laden, Ayman Zawahri, is an Egyptian who led the militant Islamic Jihad.
