Egypt won the LG Cup defeating Senegal 4-2 in an entertaining final in the Cairo International Stadium.

Buoyed by a crowd of more than 50,000 spectators, the Pharaohs recovered from an early Senegalese goal as Frederic Mendy scored after just two minutes. Egypt’s Hassan Mostafa leveled the score twelve minutes later and Emad Moteb’s goal in the 22nd-minute gave the next month’s Nations Cup hosts the lead.

Senegal made it 2-2 five minutes after half time and the game seemed destined for a draw. However, Amr Zaki fired home the third goal restoring Egypt’s lead in the 86th minute. He also scored the final goal and was chosen as the best player of the tournament. The Pharaohs won US$50,000 for winning the tournament; Senegal received US$30,000 while Uganda won US$20,000 for finishing third, having beaten World Cup finalists Ecuador 2-1 earlier. Uganda’s Kooly Sobala was awarded the best goalkeeper of the series title.

C.Y Kim, Executive Vice President, LG Digital Display Company, headed a large LG delegation at the matches. “The atmosphere of the crowd and the quality of football played was exhilarating. LG is delighted to have brought the LG Cup to Egypt, and the response of the organisers and the fans has made the exercise immensely gratifying,” said K H Kim, President, LG Electronics Middle East and Africa Operations.

“LG is synonymous with football and has supported the growth of the game enthusiastically in the region. As a company, LG believes in recognising talent and potential and is committed to building links with the local community by promoting sport in the region,” he added.
