An Egyptian diplomat on Thursday urged Arab states to ensure success for the World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting due in Doha next November, saying the world was not ready to accept another failure after the Seattle conference two years ago.
Assistant Foreign Minister for International Economic Relations Majida Al Shahin told reporters that her country has been exerting regional efforts on the regional and international levels to ensure success for the conference.
She said the success is measured by reaching an agreement and not by the number of the rounds of meetings.
She said the developing nations would demand the WTO to establish a proper balance for liberating trade.
She added that her country made all preparations for the conference through coordination between the ministries of foreign affairs, foreign trade and economy, noting that Egyptian NGOs, MPs and media men will also take part in the meeting, according to the official Kuwaiti news agency.
Cairo played host of an Arab meeting this month to prepare for the WTO conference.
The meeting grouped 14 Arab countries, nine of which are members of the WTO.
On July 13, Qatar announced that Israel would take part in the meeting despite Arab condemnation of the Jewish state’s repression of the Palestinian Intifada.
So far, Egypt, Jordan and Oman announced they would attend the meeting.
Yemen on Wednesday threatened that it would not attend the meeting if Israeli participates and the Lebanese Hizbollah movement condemned Qatar’s invitation to Israel to attend the meeting – Albawaba.com
