EHS, Environment, Health and Safety regulatory arm of Dubai World conducted a presentation entitled “General Health and Safety Obligations in Dubai" at the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) conference held at the Novotel World Trade Centre in Dubai last week.

EHS promoted and identified the key regulatory requirements for work on Dubaiworld developments  and recommended ways for improving site safety and generating better responsiveness throughout the construction industry.

The conference has focused on the need to improve safety and health measures in the construction industry.

Mr. Ahmed Abdul Hussain, CEO EHS said: “The construction landscape in the UAE has developed rapidly and we welcome organisations such as ACE promoting health and safety from within their membership, we need the support of all professionals involved with construction.  We adopt a zero tolerance policy in the pursuit of safety for construction workers”.

“General health and safety obligations have never been so important in the Emirate of Dubai where we are increasingly under the international microscope.  We are committed to promoting health and safety and have worked tirelessly to get all stakeholders to buy-in.  EHS is fostering a safety culture and enhancing an effective safety management mindset” he added.

Mr. Mark Warrington, Vice President Construction Safety, EHS, briefed senior representatives from international consultancies  on the role EHS plays in regulating workplace safety in the construction sector.  He emphasized the enforcement of  health and safety requirements and other construction regulations in Dubai.

"The participation of EHS at this event is inline with our strategy to get the support of senior construction professionals to promote health and safety throughout the design, planning and delivery of major developments.  We want construction professionals to come to Dubai and bring with them expertise and best practices from their home country.  We want them to know that good health and safety performance here in Dubai is important and nothing less than statutory compliance will be accepted.  This all fits in with our aim to progressively raise the bar in the standards of health and safety that are accepted on the developments that we regulate. " said Mark Warrington.

“The rapid pace of construction in Dubai brings with it many challenges and can increase the risk of injury to workers.  We welcome the support of professional bodies such as ACE to assist in raising the profile of health and safety, the more support and buy in we get the greater in impact will be at project level.” Mark added.

Other Presentations included an in-depth review of legal considerations, consultancy appointment, risk management, insurance and staffing issues,

Legal and risk management experts from Berrymans Lace Mawer, Shadbolt & Co, Griffiths & Armour, Willis and Halcrow talked about issues specific to working in UAE.
