Mortar shells hit a school in Syria Wednesday, leaving at least 11 children dead, AP reports. Activists on the ground say 11 children are confirmed killed, but the death toll is likely to rise because of multiple serious injuries.

The attack happened at a school east of Damascus in what is the most serious violence against Syrian children since a suicide bombing near a school in October.

It is unclear who fired the rockets as Assad’s army and the Syrian opposition both use the weapons.

The Syrian war has raged on for over three years. Thousands have been killed in the ongoing violence and millions have been forced to flee to neighboring countries.
