ALBAWABA - After a seven-year hiatus, governments in Iran and Sudan have agreed to expedite the process of restoring diplomatic representation and reopening embassies in their respective countries.

The decision to resume full diplomatic relations between Iran and Sudan came to light back in October 2023. Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Foreign Minister-designate Ali Al-Sadiq met with Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber on the sidelines of the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in Uganda.

A statement by the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement reaffirming the importance of the meeting between Al-Sadiq and Mokhber, where they discussed strategies for revitalizing bilateral ties between their nations.

According to the statement, the meeting highlighted the recent developments in the relations between Sudan and Iran, exploring ways to strengthen and enhance cooperation and coordination at bilateral, regional, and international levels.

Mehr news agency reported that both diplomats expressed dissatisfaction with the severance of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 2016 under foreign pressures, and voiced their respective governments’ readiness to restore relations.

Mokhber highlighted Iran and Sudan’s common stances in support of Palestine, calling for intensified efforts by Muslim nations to force the Zionist regime to stop its crimes against Gaza.

Al-Sadiq elaborated on recent events in Sudan, linking them to Israel's interference and collusion with its regional allies, claiming that Sudan remains a victim of foreign manipulation. The Sudanese FM also blamed the Israeli support for the unrest in Sudan on the country's refusal to normalize relations with Israel.
