Mohammad Fahim, deputy head of the provisional government, defense minister of Afghanistan, denied in Moscow on Tuesday that his country had asked Iran to extradite Afghan opposition leader Qalbuddin Hikmatyar.

Speaking jointly with his Russian counterpart Sergei Ivanov, Fahim told reporters that Afghanistan had not asked the Iranian authorities to hand over Hikmatyar.

He said Hikmatyar is an Afghan citizen and could return home at any time, but he referred to the role played by Hikmatyar in "destroying the capital Kabul.”

He added that Russia agreed to speed up technological and logistic military assistance for his country, noting that his country is not in need of fresh weapons because many caches of Russian made arms are already available in the country. (Albawaba.com)
