ALBAWABA - Unrest and tension intensified in the past week in Yemen, leaving at least 80 Southern Transitional Council (STC) separatists killed amid fighting and strikes since Friday, AFP cited a military source in the Arab country.

The source detailed that strikes and clashes between the Saudi-led coalition and UAE-backed separatist forces have left at least 80 killed and 152 injured among the separatists since Friday, a military source from the STC confirmed in a statement on Sunday to AFP.

The official from the STC forces said, "Most of the fighters were killed in air strikes targeting military bases in the Khash'ah and Say'un areas, the Barshid camp, and the road leading to Mukalla." He added that "the toll is still preliminary."

In addition, the STC source added that 130 fighters were taken captive, and 500 others are missing, following the start of the operation on Friday, which saw strikes by Saudi warplanes to retake territory seized by the secessionists.

Fighting in southern Yemen started after the STC launched a major offensive last month in the country’s Hadramout and al-Mahra provinces, which make up nearly half of Yemeni territory, Al Jazeera reported.
