Three people were reportedly killed on Sunday in a fire that blazed at a Syrian refugee encampment in Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley, local media said.

The identities of the alleged victims have not been revealed.

Flames and thick clouds of black smoke rose from the site near the town of Qab Elias, around a hour’s drive east of Beirut, and at least one explosion was seen in footage broadcast by MTV.

The cause of the fire was not yet known, said a security source.

Lebanon is hosting at least 1 million registered Syrian refugees, many of them living in informal tented settlements scattered around the country.

The government says there are some 1.5 million Syrians in the country.

A recent UN report revealed that Lebanon hosts the largest refugee community compared to its size in the world.

Local authorities have struggled to cope with the burden of the displaced, repeatedly urging the international community for more funds.
