The first meeting of the Bahraini-Syrian Joint Supreme Committee, chaired by the prime ministers of the two countries, is scheduled to be held in Damascus in November, said Bahraini ambassador to Syria, Waheed Sayyar.

He told the Gulf Daily News that Bahrain’s Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has received an invitation from Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa Miro to attend the meeting.

This will be the highest-level working visit by Bahrain to Syria in recent years, said Sayyar.

Bahrain’s emir, Sheikh Hamad Al Khalifa, visited Syria last year, to attend the funeral of President Hafez Al Assad.

Since 1975, the countries have signed 12 bilateral agreements covering a range of subjects, including transportation and aviation, investment promotion, avoidance of double taxation, tourism and information exchange.

An important agreement, signed in Bahrain in September last year during a visit by Miro, provided for the establishment of the Joint Supreme Committee, at the level of the Prime Ministers.

"The first meeting of the committee, which is the highest level committee between Bahrain and Syria, is to be held in Damascus in November, at dates being finalized," said the envoy.

The committee will discuss a host of topics, including economic and political issues.

There is a possibility that the two countries may also sign a cultural and education agreement, said Sayyar – Albawaba.com
