Nuclear safety and security are essential elements of any nuclear power programme, which need to be recognized and dealt with since the very early stages. The creation of a nuclear safety culture and a competent and independent nuclear regulator, nuclear safeguards and security of materials and installations are very important to guarantee the safe operation of the plants and reassure the local population and the international community.
The workshop is intended to facilitate exchange of views and raise the awareness on nuclear safety and security issues, based on the long experience of European Union (EU) countries with nuclear power and the European Commission on cooperation and assistance to the countries of the former Soviet Union.
Areas for possible technical cooperation and assistance by the European Commission to Jordan in the fields of nuclear safety and security will also be discussed.
