A roadside explosion targeting an American patrol killed five people, including an American soldier, west of the Iraqi capital on Wednesday, an interior ministry official and the US military said.

Ten other civilians were hurt in the blast as the military patrol passed in the town of Abu Ghraib, 15 miles from the capital, the official told AFP. "The blast killed one US soldier," a US military spokesman said.

The latest death made May the deadliest month for the American military since September 2008. At least 20 U.S. troops have been killed so far this month, compared with 25 in September, according to the AP.
