Israeli forces shot and wounded at least five Palestinians with live rounds in clashes along the beleaguered Gaza Strip's borderline on Friday, medical sources said.

One Palestinian, identified as 18-year-old Wasim al-Amour, was shot in the foot during clashes east of Khan Yunis, local doctors said.

The Gazan Ministry of Health, meanwhile, said that another three Palestinians were shot with live fire east of Gaza City and one east of the coastal enclave's central district.

Two others reportedly suffered excessive tear gas inhalation in the central district, along with three more near the Beit Hanoun crossing.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed that Israeli troops opened fire on Palestinian protesters along the border, saying that "dozens of Palestinians" had rolled burning tires and thrown stones toward Israeli troops.

She said that when a group approached the "perimeter zone," Israeli soldiers opened fire at their lower extremities, although she was only able to confirm one injury.

Palestinians have frequently demonstrated along the Gazan border since a wave of unrest swept the occupied Palestinian territory last October, often meeting a violent response from the Israeli army.

More than 20 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been shot dead during clashes through the period.
