ALBAWABA - The death toll from floods in Safi Province in Morocco jumped to 37, Moroccan official television announced on Monday.

Earlier, authorities said 21 people died in exceptional floods that struck the province of Safi, about 330 kilometers south of the capital Rabat.

According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior, the torrential rains, which lasted for a brief period of less than an hour, caused exceptional flash floods that swept through a number of homes and shops.

At least 32 people were also injured and were taken to Mohammed V Hospital in Safi for treatment.

The same source added that the material losses were significant, particularly in the city of Safi.

Initial reports indicate that floodwaters inundated approximately 70 homes and shops in the old city, especially in the Bir Anzaran Street and Abu al-Dahab Square, and that about 10 cars were swept away by the floods.
