Four people have died in a powerful explosion in a hotel in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, the interior ministry said Wednesday.

The blast at the Hotel Ambassador in a residential area where many diplomats live "was very powerful", according to the city mayor Stefan Sofiyanski, who also said that the victims of the explosion were foreigners.

The interior ministry confirmed the deaths, but could not say whether those killed were indeed foreigners.

Others were left wounded as a result of the blast.

According to state radio, a fire broke out in the hotel following the explosion. The causes of the blast are not yet known -- SOFIA (AFP)
