On behalf of the Mayor of Amman, Omar Maani, City Deputy Director for Public Works, Eng. Mustafa Al Louzi, recently patronized the celebration of Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) of the Tree Day, which was held in Wadi Al Qitar.

Al Louzi said that 15 thousand trees have been planted in the location, which represents the twelfth phase of GAM’s projects to fight desertification on a space area of 6000 dunnums with half million trees.

He pointed out that the ceremony’s venue was previously a place for debris and wastes, but thanks to GAM’s efforts represented by leveling and adding a layer of soil, it became part of Al Hussein National Parks in Wadi Al Qitar, thus contributing to the aesthetic look and to the environment of the Capital.

Head of Parks Department in GAM, Engineer Nibal Qattan, stressed on GAM’s keenness on expanding the green spaces in the Capital Amman by increasing the number of trees and public parks, noting that GAM planted about quarter a million trees to beautify its projects during 2009.

The planted evergreen trees reached to a million, in the same year, in addition to 6000 m2 of grass and more than 2000 cactus trees.

Qattan also commended the efforts exerted by the Ministry of Agriculture for providing GAM with 80 thousand trees to be planted during the phases of desertification fighting project in Wadi AL Qitar.

Last year, GAM opened many parks in different areas; it also rehabilitated some old parks and decorated streets and fields, such as Methqal Al Fayez Park in Al Jeeza region, Hashemite Park in Sahab, Hawouz Park in Zahran, and another park in Marj AL Hamam, and soon GAM will start founding Uhod Park.

Recently, GAM intends to establish some parks, namely, King Abdullah II Park which will be similar to Al Hussein Parks in eastern Amman.

The Japanese Park is also expected to be inaugurated next April, however, Abdoun Park in Zahran, Hadikatokum (Your Park) project, Racing Field Park, Al Nadwa Park in Al Naser region, Totanji Park in Sahab, the Sports Club of Husban and Um Al Basateen are underway.

The ceremony attendees included some of GAM Council members and GAM officials, the President of Agriculture Engineers Association, Mahmoud Abu Ghanimeh, and some school students.
