Gulf Arab countries warned Saturday that Israel's “savage” military operations in autonomous Palestinian territories was preventing the Palestinian Authority (PA) from fulfilling its duty towards peace.

"The Council condemns the Israeli forces' savage operations in the Palestinian territories, and also says the continuing violence does not serve the efforts deployed to restore peace" in the Middle East, foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) said in a statement.

The GCC added, "the violence prevented the Palestinian Authority from carrying out its duties for the safeguard of security and stability."

Convening in the Saudi Red Sea port city of Jeddah, the GCC foreign ministers also reiterated their support for the peace plan proposed by Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah.

They said the initiative, which was adopted by the recent Arab summit in Beirut, "is a basis for a peaceful settlement within the framework of international legitimacy" of the Arab-Israeli conflict. (Albawaba.com)
