A German newspaper reported Tuesday that Elhanan Tannenbaum, a retired officer in the Israeli army, captured by Hizbullah, is alive. According to this report, the Lebanese resistance group is ready to trade him for 200 prisoners.
Among those demanded in a potential swap would be West Bank Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, The Frankfurter Allgemeine reported. Barghouti has been in Israeli custody since April.
About two weeks ago a Lebanese daily indicated that mediation efforts toward a prisoner exchange between Israel and Hizbullah, were stepped up. The daily reported that Hizbullah demanded that Barghouti would be included in the deal.
Hizbullah captured three Israeli soldiers in October 2000, but last year Israel declared them dead. (Albawaba.com)
