Gulf Air's cargo volume increased 9.2 percent to 88,000 tons in the first six months of this year, reported the Gulf News on Monday.

June was particularly busy, when the carrier handled 15,000 tons of cargo and 359 tons of mail. In the first quarter, Gulf Air lifted 41,095 tons, and in the second quarter 46,905 tons.

Despite the tough market conditions, the increase in cargo is still in line with the company's expectations, a Gulf Air cargo department spokesperson said.

"All carriers are feeling the effects of the economic slowdown," the spokesperson said.

"Gulf Air operates in a highly competitive environment; however, the continued focus on key markets such as Asia, the Far East, Australia and Western Europe, and improved competitiveness and service have proved effective." – Albawaba.com
