UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon called for the restoration of Yemen President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi after the Houthis declared a new constitution Friday, according to the AFP.

The Western-backed president was forced to resign after the Houthis stormed his presidential office.

"The situation is very, very seriously deteriorating, with the Houthis taking power and making this government vacuum," Ban told the AFP. "There must be restoration of legitimacy of President Hadi."

The Houthis declared a new constituion for the country Friday about a month after the country lost its presidential administration. Yemeni Prime Minister Khalid Bahah was also forced to resign along with Hadi.

Ban told the AFP UN envoy Jamal Benomar has been facilitating "a way out of the current political crisis and a return to the path of the peaceful political transition."
