AFP reports that Human Rights Watch released a report on Wednesday revealing that Daesh had executed dozens of civilians in Sirte, Libya.

"The Sirte residents described scenes of horror -- public beheadings, corpses in orange jumpsuits hanging from scaffolding in what they termed 'crucifixions' and masked fighters snatching men from their beds in the night," the HRW report said.

"They said morality police aided by informants patrolled the streets, threatening, fining or flogging men for smoking, listening to music, or failing to ensure their wives and sisters were covered in loose black abayas (robes)."

The HRW report detailed executions of over fifty people, largely without trial or due judicial process, by decapitation and firing squad.

In addition to executions, interviews conducted by HRW indicate that Daesh is holding Sirte under siege. Food, medicine, fuel, and cash are all controlled by Daesh.

"There are no groceries, the hospital has no doctors or nurses, there is no medicine... There are spies on every street. Most people have left but we are trapped. We don't have enough money to leave," a 30-year-old Sirte resident told HRW.

Militants seized Sirte close to a year ago. Despite multiple airstrikes from Libyan and US forces, the city remains under Daesh control.
