huawei technologies presents business case for hspa deployment
Company addresses operators’ challenges to reduce TCO
Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, (“Huawei”), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, will share its experience in HSPA deployment in the Middle East at the GSM>3G Middle East and Gulf conference taking place in Dubai on 2 & 3 September.
Mobile broadband has become the next profit opportunity for mobile operators. For the end users, it provides added value to traditional broadband access by allowing them to access a variety of broadband applications and services anytime, anywhere, and with seamless mobility. HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) will be the main technology enabling mobile broadband access, capitalizing on the success of 3G networks deployment.
As an intermediate stage between 3G (R99/R4) introduced in 2003 and LTE (Long Term Evolution), which is the future trend, HSPA combines the advantages of mobility with broadband capabilities to meet the requirements of mobile multimedia streaming and high-speed Internet access.
HSPA has been recognized by mobile operators globally as a leading mobile broadband access solution. Mobile operators have been considerably speeding up the enrolment of HSPA networks since 2006, with 115 commercial networks deployed in first quarter of 2007, compared to 18 networks deployed in the same period last year.
In the Middle East, the potential for 3G\HSPA broadband deployments is boosted by the limitation of fixed broadband penetration as well as by the complexity of the expanding fixed broadband infrastructure.  With only a 9% fixed broadband penetration rate in the region, mobile broadband services are well positioned for success.
“We believe HSPA is the mainstream mobile broadband technology for its mature commercial deployment, operation, and ability to provide lower cost per Mega byte. It also enables faster adoption of new services such as Mobile TV, Mobile VoIP and multi-player interactive games in a cost effective way”, said Wang Jiading, President, Huawei Middle East & Gulf, Huawei Technologies.

Huawei recorded 28 new UMTS/HSPA contracts in 2006 to become the world's top UMTS/HSPA solutions provider and has added another 19 in the first quarter of 2007 alone.  With its rapid growth in GSM network deployments over the last three years, Huawei has emerged as one of the world's top three players in this market.
“Focusing on customers’ requirements is crucial for Huawei to be recognised by global operators. Customer needs drive our research and development processes and, with our innovative solutions, we aim to create maximum value for our customers,” adds Jiading.
