Hundreds of Palestinians on Tuesday took part in the funeral of Hussein Atallah, 57, who died from cancer on Saturday inside Israeli prison, in what his family is calling a case of medical neglect.
The funeral procession set off from the Rafidiya Governmental hospital in Nablus in the northern occupied West Bank. Attalah’s body had been transferred to the hospital from Israel’s Ramla prison late Monday.
A military funeral was given to Atallah, whose body was carried by Palestinian Security Forces towards Nablus’ main mosque for prayers and then to the city’s cemetery for burial.
Palestinian flags and flags of the Fatah movement, with which Atallah was affiliated, were waved.
Atallah was sentenced to 35 years in jail of which he served 23. He was diagnosed with cancer two years ago.
Prisoners’ rights groups accused the Israeli Prison Services of medically neglecting Atallah and not providing him with necessary and adequate treatment, which they say led to his death.
