A series of 25 crashes on Interstate 55 has left at least two dead and 30 injured, according to St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre.
The incident occurred in multiple locations along the north and southbound lanes, prompting closures between Ruddock and Manchac.
The hazardous conditions were exacerbated by a combination of thick fog and smoke from marsh fires on the South Shore, severely limiting visibility for drivers. Sheriff Tregre reported a total of 25 crashes, with three involving 18-wheelers, two of which were completely engulfed in flames.
First responders faced immense challenges as they rushed to aid the victims. With over 100 individuals on foot, deputies had to navigate the chaotic scene, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
As investigations continue, it is essential for all drivers to remain vigilant and prioritize safety on the roads, particularly in challenging weather conditions.
