Indonesia has voiced its support for the UAE’s position in its dispute with Iran over the Persian Gulf islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs, and Abu Mussa.
The Indonesian stand came at a meeting Tuesday between a parliamentary delegation visiting the country and members of the UAE Federal National Council (FNC), according to the Khaleej Times.
The two sides discussed bilateral ties and ways of strengthening cooperation between the two countries on issues of interest.
The Indonesian MPs said that the Indonesian leadership had raised the issue with Iranian leaders and senior officials.
The dispute over Abu Mussa and the Tunb islands became more serious in 1992 when Iran unilaterally tried to take control of the entry of third country nationals into the UAE portion of Abu Musa island.
Tehran subsequently backed off in the face of significant diplomatic support for the UAE in the region, but in 1994 it increased its military presence on the disputed islands – Albawaba.com
