ALBAWABA - The Ukrainian military announced that it had targeted Russia's largest oil refinery [Omsk refinery] in Siberia with drones, in what is considered the longest-range attack since the start of the war. Russian authorities confirmed the incident, according to Reuters.
The Ukrainian General Staff explained in a statement that the attack caused a massive fire at the refinery, which is located approximately 2,700 kilometers from Kyiv-controlled territory, near the Russian border with Kazakhstan.
Vitaliy Khutsenko, the governor of the Omsk region, said that Ukraine attacked the refinery, adding that Russian air defenses destroyed most of the drones involved in the attack.
Khutsenko stated in a post on the Russian messaging app Max that there were no casualties and that emergency services were working at the site. The extent of the damage to the refinery remains unclear.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as "an important achievement for the Ukrainian armed forces," and said, "Siberia is now also within range of Ukrainian precision strikes."
