Intel Middle East is gearing up to launch its Pentium 4 chip in Egyptian markets at GITEX Cairo, which is being held at the Cairo International Conference Center from April 4th-7th, The Middle East Times reported.
According to the weekly, the new P4 chip, which is aimed largely at Internet users, aims to reduce the download rate, offering higher speeds for streaming audio and video downloads, which can be up to 10 times faster when compared to systems featuring its predecessor, the Pentium III.
In addition to launching the Pentium 4 processor in Egypt, Intel intends to meet with numerous IT representatives in the region to help identify effective strategies that will reduce the level of 'gray market' merchandise, which is currently very prevalent, the paper added.
In 2000, some 300,000 PCs were sold in the Egyptian market. Roughly 70 percent of the units sold were locally assembled using imported components, and Intel is specifically targeting the small and medium-sized enterprises that assemble computers, recognizing that this sector plays a significant role in helping Egyptians access the Internet – Albawaba.com
