When Intel launched four Platform Definition Centers (PDCs) around the world in August the company promised that each of these would provide locally relevant computing solutions based on Intel® technology.  Visitors to Intel’s stand at GITEX will be able to gain an insight into the type of applications that the newly opened PDC in Cairo is set to deliver as two solutions developed by Intel’s PDC in the Asia Pacific region will be on display.

The two solutions – ‘Icafe’ and ‘Learning PC’ – have been developed with the specific business, social and cultural requirements of two specific countries (China and India) to the fore.
‘Icafe’, for instance, enables internet café owners in India to monitor and repair PCs in a centralized manner by incorporating manageability software on Intel motherboards.

‘Learning PC’, which has been developed by an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in China, allows parents to control access by their children to PCs  and  to become more directly involved  in their day-to-day education.  The PC incorporates such features as a physical key that allows parents to lock the PC into learning  mode, plus a tablet monitor equipped with pen-based input for children to practice writing  Chinese characters.

“Locally developed platforms that address the specific needs of users within particular regions are vital for the continued growth of technology in our region” said Khaled Elamrawi, Cairo Platform Definition Center manager,  “The iCafe and Learning PC demonstrations that will be on display will provide excellent examples of how tailor made platforms can be created to cater to the specific usage models in their region.  The team at the PDC in Cairo are working on a number of similar initiatives and we can expect to see the result of their work in this area soon.  The establishment of the Cairo PDC underscores Intel’s commitment to work with its channel within the Middle East to create new computing platforms that are specifically relevant to the region and that help stimulate PC usage.”
Each PDC is staffed by local ethnographers, designers and solution engineers who conduct in-depth research and analysis to drive platform development.  In addition to delivering leading microprocessor technology Intel is also taking a comprehensive platform approach in its channel business by integrating hardware and software components that are tested for interoperability.  This is designed to make it easier for channel customers to build and bring platforms to market more rapidly, enhancing their competitiveness.

Intel will be on Stand Q3 in Hall 3 at GITEX* 2005 which takes place from 25th to 29th  September at the Dubai International Exhibition Center.   Intel will also be present at Computer Shopper which takes place from 24th to 29th September.
