According to Iranian telecommunications minister, Mahmoud Vaezi, Iran is developing a system to identify all Internet users who log on in Iran, reported the AFP.
"Because of our efforts, in future when people want to use the Internet they will be identified, and there will be no web surfer whose identity we do not know," Vaezi said. He stated that a team of technicians is developing the system, but did not disclose technical details.
Iran has tight social media and Internet restrictions. Last month the minister announced the anticipated release of “smart filtering” over the next six months. The system would censor Internet content that government authorities consider offensive or criminal. In 2011 Iran formed a team of Internet police to fight “cyber crimes,” particularly anti-government dissidence on social media.
According to official figures, over 40 percent Iran’s population of 75 million use the Internet. A recent study found that nearly 70 percent of young users circumvent Internet restrictions with illegal software.
