Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmad Azizi said on Wednesday that Washington has put pressure on Syria and other regional states in a bid to settle the Middle East issue in favor of Israel. According to Irna, he made the remark during a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

During this meeting, Azizi submitted the message of Iranian President Mohammad Khatami to Bashar al-Assad. According to Azizi, the measures recently taken by Syria vis-a-vis foreign threats were in line with the interests of the regional nations.

He expressed optimism that the unity and solidarity would be established in the region through consolidation of national resistance.

On his part, the Syrian president, underlined his country's determination to resist all threats. He praised Tehran's efforts to resolve the Middle East issue, saying those behind such threats seek to break people's resistance and hatch new plots against the region.

Azizi arrived in Damascus on Tuesday to meet with senior Syrian officials and hand over Khatami's message.
