At least 14 people were killed when a car bomb exploded near a church in southern Baghdad after a Christmas service on Wednesday, police and medics said.

The bomb hit a church in the Doura district, and seemed to target Christian worshippers while they were leaving the church on Christmas, police sources told Reuters.

Most of the victims were Christian and at least 28 people were wounded, Reuters added.

Iraq's ancient Christian community has more than halved in recent years, from an estimated population of 900,000, the BBC reported.

According to the BBC, Iraqi churches have been targeted across the country since the fall of former dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003.
