Iraqi and Iranian officials are scheduled to meet Monday at a border post between the two countries to discuss a new exchange of the remains of soldiers killed during their 1980-1988 war, an Iraqi official said Sunday.
The talks at Iraq's Shalamjah post, near Basra, will be followed Tuesday by an exchange of remains of soldiers killed in the war, the foreign ministry official said in a statement.
Iraq and Iran often swap remains of soldiers killed during the war, but they have yet to sign a formal peace treaty nearly 14 years after the end of their conflict, which cost about one million lives, according to AFP.
The ministry official did not specify the number of remains to be exchanged on Tuesday but said that Baghdad had recently repatriated the remains of 3,998 Iranians and Tehran had returned the remains of 5,323 Iraqis. (Albawaba.com)
