Two U.S. Marine jets from the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier were reported missing while flying in support of operations in Iraq, the U.S. military said Tuesday.
The body of one pilot from one of two missing U.S. Marine jets was found later in the day. Contact was lost with the aircraft at 10:10 p.m. Monday, a US statement said.
In Ramadi, gunmen attacked occupation forces Tuesday, setting off a battle that killed 12 attackers, an Iraqi soldier and two Iraqi civilians, the American army said.
Two Marines were slightly wounded. The battle started when a group of armed men attacked a checkpoint in Ramadi, west of Baghdad, the US statement said.
Meanwhile, U.S. forces killed 12 other people and injured two others, including a six year old girl, in a clash and bombing close to the Syrian border on Monday, the U.S. military said in a statement on Tuesday.
It conveyed six troops were wounded in the fight against suspected members of al Qaeda's wing in Iraq.
Nine of the men killed were heavily armed with assault rifles and hand grenades, the U.S. military said.
