Iraq: Western journalist abducted as US holds talks with ”insurgent” leader

A female Western journalist was abducted in Baghdad on Saturday and her translator killed, police said. According to Reuters, they said she was on her way to a meeting with a Sunni leader when a car carrying a number of gunmen blocked her vehicle in the Adel district near Malik bin Anas mosque in west Baghdad. The armed men killed her driver, an Iraqi journalist who also worked as her translator.

 

Meanwhile, American officials have been holding talks with local Iraqi "insurgent", The New York Times reported on Saturday. Citing a Western diplomat, an Iraqi political leader and an Iraqi "insurgent" leader, the newspaper said that the talks were aimed at drawing the local leaders into the political process.
