Iraqi Vice-President Taha Yassin Ramadan affirmed that UN Security Council resolution 1409 is worse than the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Iraq and the UN in 1996.
During an interview with Iraqi Satellite Channel, cited by the official Iraq News Agency INA on Monday, Ramadhan said that such a resolution reflected the US “evil administration's hostility” against the Iraqi people and leadership. The US administration, according to him, works to prolong and tighten the embargo and continue aggression on Iraq.
Ramadhan added that resolution 1409 brought upon new complications in that Memorandum of Understanding. The US administration, he claimed, used all “cheap and vicious” means to continue “suspending approval on Iraqi contracts”, INA added.
He further said that Baghdad still considered the Memorandum of Understanding an interim procedure and called on the Security Council to implement its obligations and work for lifting the embargo and stopping the aggressive acts on the “so called No-Fly Zones in Southern and Northern Iraq”.
Iraq calls for implementing resolution 687 especially paragraph 14, the Vice President said, concerning the removal of weapons of mass destruction, especially “Zionists' weapons”, in the region.
Ramadhan added that Iraq is keen on resuming dialogue with the UN Secretary General aimed at reaching a mechanism that would help lift the embargo and end the suffering of the people of Iraq. (Albawaba.com)
